Purpose:
This assignment has three objectives:
1. To help you understand some of the issues relating to the effective use of e-mail and social networking sites.
2. To make you aware of on-line resources dealing with e-mail and social networking etiquette.
3. To give you additional experience with working as a team and using the brainstorming technique to develop a "deliverable".
To Do:
1. Group yourselves into six teams of 4-5 students.
2. Determine which three groups will work on email, and which will work on social networking.
3. For each group, designate a recorder.
4. Assign each member two articles to read.
5. Read the assigned articles.
6. Reassemble as a group, and hold a brainstorming session about the most important points to include in your list. The recorder should note all ideas.
7. Rank the ideas from 1 to 10.
8. Prepare a paper (actually an annotated list) that includes a series of ten practices that are most important in communicating effectively by e-mail or contributing to social networking sites. Each item should consist of a 5-10 word phrase, followed by 2-4 sentences of explanation, based on consensus of the members. Items should be in your own words, and should not repeat verbatim material that appears on the web.
9. Submit your list to the instuctor for grading and distribution. A legible handwritten list is expected. If you can get access to a computer with MS Word, you may type it up, save it as an electronic file, and email it to me at kenneth.klemow@wilkes.edu.
Grading:
Point value: 25 points. Grading will be based on how well thought out your listing is, and how well it appears to synthesize information from various on-line sources. All members of the team will receive the same grade (unless the team members direct me to do otherwise).
When due: 10:50 A.M. Wednesday, 16 September 2009
Note: The annotated list that you develop will be circulated among all students in the class, and will be the source of questions on your first exam.
