Purpose:
This assignment has three objectives:
1. To give you experience with using some of the advanced features of MS Word.
2. To give you experience obtaining text-based and graphical information from the web, and incorporating it into a word processing application.
3. To give you experience with designing a relatively complex document that has certain stylistic features.
To Do:
The purpose of this assignment will be to give you experience with putting together a "newsletter" that focuses on a plant, animal, chemical element, or molecule of interest. The title of your newsletter will be "All about XXX" where XXX is the organism, element, or molecule of interest. We will survey students around the room to ensure that no two students choose the same topic.
The emphasis of this assignment will be on how well you use the features of MS Word, rather than on the actual content of this newsletter. Therefore, the content for this assignment will be based on information that you obtain from the web.
To do:
1. Select an organism, element, or molecule.
2. Conduct a search on the web (using Google.com, Hotbot.com, Snap.com, or your favorite search engine) of documents that contain information about your topic. Make sure that you find documents that contain text and pictures.
3. Start Microsoft Word and open a new file.
4. Create a newsletter that has the following features:
a. A banner across the top that contains the title of your newsletter, your name, your email, and the date.
b. Must be at least two pages long, and no more than four.
c. Must contain stories from at least three sources. The information should not be duplicative.
d. At least two images
e. A bulleted list
f. Text in two columns with a line between.
g. Word wrap around the images
h. A formatted table
i. A header with a running head and the page number. Suppress the head for the first page.
j. Correct citation of your sources
Other features will be up to you. Up to three bonus points will be awarded for especially well done and creative newsletters that include other features.
Grading
This assignment will be worth 30 points, based on how many of the items (a-j) that you carry out.
D. Email the document to me as an attachment, following the directions given in class.
Grading:
Point value: 30 points. To receive all ten points, I must receive an e-mail message that contains your newsletter as an attachment. The attachment must contain all of the items requested above.
