Overview:

The final two sessions of FRF 101O will involve presentations by Mr. William Toothill, Director of the Wilkes University Geographical Information Systems Laboratory. He will speak about the nature of GIS / GPS technology, and its diverse applications. You will be expected to attend these sessions, as you have other sessions of FRF 101O.

In order for me to gauge your reaction to Mr. Toothill's presentations, I am asking you to send me an email in which you will address three items (see below).

This assignment has two objectives:

1. To give me some sense as to how well you understood the information presented by Mr. Toothill pertaining to Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS)

2. To get you to think about the importance of GIS and GPS technologies to society at large, and to your own career.

Send me an email that addresses the following three points (in at least three separate paragraphs).

1. Define the terms "Geographical Information Systems" and Global Positioning System" in your own words (5 points)

2. Explain how GIS and GPS are important to society at large (12 points)

3. Explain how you could make use of both GIS and GPS, either in your career or in some other aspect of your life (8 points)

1. Send an e-mail to me containing your response by 5:00 P.M., 12 December 2002 (the day after your presentations). Make sure that your name appears in the subject line of your email.

2. Your answer could either be incorporated in the body of your email, or submitted as an MS Word file that is attached to your email.

3. The assignment will be worth a total of 25 points, allocated as described above.
