Hughes, Sandra L., Sara Zuchowski, and Kenneth M. Klemow. 2002. IMPROVING THE ON-LINE KEY TO THE PLANTS OF THE KIRBY PARK NATURAL AREA. Contributed poster: Pennsylvania Academy of Science meeting. Abstract: Journal of the Pennsylvania Academy of Science 75:108.

Beginning in 1997, teams of Wilkes students developed an on-line key to the plants from the Kirby Park Natural Area in Wilkes-Barre. The key incorporates images and text, linked by hypertext in a dichotomous metaphor, allowing non-botanists to identify plants in the Natural Area. Pages were created in HTML, with .jpg or .gif pictures, and uploaded to the Wilkes University server at http://wilkes-fs1.wilkes.edu/~kirbypl. Beginning in the summer of 2001, the key was upgraded to improve format consistency, enhance image clarity, provide clearer choices, and include more species. In addition, a query form is being developed for users who prefer not to use the original dichotomous version. Field testing with a representative group of novices will be done to ensure accuracy. consistency, and ease of use. A demonstration of the key will be provided.
